Heat Helpsbut Not As Much As You’d Think
Beyond Vinyasa and Hatha yoga, Bikram and other warm and hot versions of yoga burn the most calories by far because they utilize many calorie-burning poses in a sweltering room. Bikram classes typically take place in rooms around 110 degrees Fahrenheit, whereas warm or heated Power or Vinyasa yoga can be anywhere from 90 to 110 degrees.
Some sources state that hot yoga can melt anywhere from 1,000 to 1,500 calories off of sweaty participants. Though both Thielen and Carneiro acknowledge that is possible, research out of Colorado State University found that, when men and women did 90 minutes of Bikram yoga at 105 degrees, women burned 330 calories and men burned 460 calories on average.
The upside of hot yoga may be slightly overstated, but it’s not a total myth either. Extra energy used to cool the body with sweat burns extra calories, and hot forms of yoga further maximize gains by promoting strength, stamina, and endurance. Hot rooms boost cardiovascular health and lung capacity by working out respiratory and circulation systems, say both Thielen and Carneiro.
Of course, Bikram and other hot yoga styles come with the risk ofyou guessed itinjury. Dehydration is an obvious concern, but hot rooms increase flexibility. And, while that can be great for pushing certain poses to the limit, rookies are more prone to overdoing itand stretching too far.

This form of yoga involves different postures and movement happens from one posture to another continuously. It includes backbends, arm balances, inversions, and standing poses. It is performed in very warm and humid conditions.
This form of yoga works on strength training and helps build lean muscle mass throughout the body, along with developing resistance. It creates balanced strength throughout.
As you indulge in the Vinyasa flow, the continuous movements help you stretch each muscle and strengthen it simultaneously, increasing your range of motion as well as mobility. Here as breath is taken and released along with the movements, the body gets fresh oxygen and the muscles become relaxed. It flexes the muscles and releases and reduces stress from the ligaments, joints, and tendons, preventing injuries, tears, and muscle pulls.
The link between the breath and the movement increases your heart rate. There is a whole lot of heat generated in the body, which, in turn, results in the burning of calories. One hour of Hot Vinyasa Yoga can burn up to 450 calories.

Does Hot Yoga Burn More Calories Than Unheated Yoga
“It has become a popular belief that hot yoga is good for weight loss, but this is not scientifically backed with relation to hot yoga specifically,” said , a registered yoga teacher who’s trained in hot yoga. “Yoga itself will burn calories, but hot yoga is not proven to burn more calories than a nonheated Vinyasa class.”
That doesn’t mean hot yoga can’t be good for your calorie burn and weight-loss goals. The high temperature forces your body to work harder to cool itself off , which increases your heart rate, said Jorianne Numbers, MS, an exercise physiologist at Northwestern Medicine. A 2002 study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise supports that heat can lead to more weight loss, showing that you burn more fat for fuel in hot temperatures.
There’s also the fact that your muscles are more pliable in warmer temperatures, Jorianne said. That makes it easier to stretch and hold poses for longer, which can positively impact calorie burn. Julia also told POPSUGAR that, “Hot yoga, specifically power yoga, may encourage you to work your muscles a bit harder, which may lead to burning more calories to a comparative Vinyasa class where you don’t feel as challenged.” However, much of that might be a mental effect of feeling like you’re should push yourself harder in the warm, sweaty environment than a physical reaction to the heat, she explained.

Minutes At 105 Degrees
Bikram yoga is a standardized 90-minute session featuring 26 postures and two breathing exercises performed in a room heated to 105 degrees Fahrenheit and kept at 40 percent humidity. In his most recent study, which was highlighted in recent online issues of Time and Glamour magazines, Tracy measured the bodys response to a yoga session performed by 19 seasoned 18- to 40-year-old Bikram practitioners 11 women and eight men.
He found that the participants showed elevated heart rates averaging about 160 beats per minute and core temperatures averaging 100.3 degrees F, all within a safe range. Tracy also found that the bodys average metabolic rate, or calories burned, was roughly equivalent to walking briskly for a full 90 minutes.
Some practitioners have reported burning as many as 1,000 calories in one Bikram yoga session, but Tracy said the figure in his study averaged about 460 calories for men and 330 for women. Differences in body size explained the caloric difference between the sexes.

What Should You Eat Before Hot Yoga
As hot yoga is an intensive form of physical activity it is important to provide your body with the right fuel. It is best to avoid eating within an hour of class beginning and to avoid eating anything heavy, that requires time to digest within 2 hours of class.
Focus on eating foods that provide complex carbohydrates for energy. Perhaps more important than what you eat though is what you drink. Be sure to stay hydrated before class.
Taking small and regular sips of water throughout the day will help ensure you are hydrated and dont arrive to class with a belly full of water. Being too full can make performing certain poses, such as twists, very uncomfortable.
