My Experience Using The Grp Yoga Mat

A few things immediately surprised me about my standard GRP mat: How thick it is and how truly different the top layer feels, which is so similar to something like leather and unlike the suppleness of a rubber mat. The GRP feels more substantial.

Upon unrolling it, I noticed it also had a pretty unpleasant smell. Though, if it worked well, this was nothing that I couldn’t forgive, or fix with a deep clean.

In my hot yoga class, there were a few standout moments. One is that when you slap the mat on the floor there is a ring of finality to it once it lays flat with a “smack,” it’s not moving. Even in all the classes I’ve taken to it since that first test, it has never slipped or moved during a class.

Most importantly, though, the GRP Mat 6mm does a fantastic job of absorbing sweat. It’s the only yoga mat I’ve comfortably used without a towel in a hot yoga class, and I was happy enough to toss my other mats in favor of this one. To me, there’s no question that it’s worth the money.

It took far longer for me to even see the sweat on my mat , and even then it was far more manageable. It was refreshing to be able to attend hot yoga and be completely present listening to the instructor, challenging myself in my poses, and enjoying transitions rather than slipping around. Over the month and many classes I tested it in, there were points when I started to lose a little traction, but I didn’t experience it in most classes which is far from the norm.

Its Still Very Portable

If youre worried about carrying around a bigger mat, then the 4mm is your option. Even with the absorbing layer, its no bulkier or heavier than the regular mat I used to work with. I will admit that the 6mm is slightly heavier, but thats not at all a con for me. Its still easy to cart around, especially with Mandukas mat carriers. I just use the shoulder straps and have had no issues at allits worth it to have the extra comfort.

Meet The Manduka Grp Mat Series

Manduka spent over three years engineering a yoga mat that could withstand hot yoga without a towel. The GRP launched as a single mat to be the ultimate hot yoga accessory and one that could also work seamlessly in every other yoga environment.

The line has since been expanded to include three mats of different thickness and portability: the standard 6MM , which is an updated version of the original I own the Lite 4mm , which is a thinner, lighter version of the standard and the Adapt 5mm , the newest mat to the GRP line that features slightly different technology than the other two.

All three are 71 inches by 26 inches the standard size of a yoga mat. The GRP Hot Yoga Mat 6mm and GRP Lite Hot Yoga Mat 4mm are both made with a leather-like top layer and 100% open airflow to evaporate moisture on contact and reduce bacteria buildup. They both also have a charcoal-infused rubber core to absorb sweat and mitigate odor.

According to the company, these mats should actually get grippier with sweat an industry paradox because unlike other closed-cell yoga mats , the GRP is made from open-celled polyurethane which lets the mat breathe. It does this by taking in moisture and then letting it evaporate.

The biggest difference between the two mats is their padding and, therefore, weight: the 6mm provides more cushioning and weighs 5.5 pounds, while the Lite 4mm has slightly less padding but weighs only 3.7 pounds.

Needs Airing Out Between Sessions

For all of the mats in the GRP series, because they absorb sweat, you really should be airing them out between practice sessions. Rolling them up and storing them immediately is gonna get funky with the bacteria count and also reduce the life of your mat. So its a bit more maintenance than a mat that doesnt absorb sweat.

How The Grp Mat Performed In The Hot Hot Heat

I’m already sweaty as I climb the steep flight of stairs leading up to Y7’s Flatiron location, and growing more skeptical by the minute. “No yoga mat will be able to stand up to these wet palms,” I think to myself.

The woman at the front desk asks me if I need a towel. She has no idea how high-stakes her question is. Do I want to rent one… just in case? After a pause that’s probably far too long, I mumble a quick “No.”

Y7 is notorious for beat-bumping music, and as I gave the mat a quick once-over, Chance the Rapper cheered me on. Good sign, I thought. Texture-wise, the mat felt similar to Manduka’s OG Pro Mat, but there’s something slightly different. It’s also super thick, a feature that immediately felt like heaven under my runner’s knees.

Class begins and the teacher cues the first downward dog. I wait for my palms to start sliding forward…But I’m actually sticking to the mat.

Class begins and the teacher cues the first downward dog. I wait for my palms to start sliding forward on the mat, but much to my surprise, I’m actually sticking to it. I feel so steady that I engage my upper arms, lean into my shoulders, and feel a gooey stretch across my upper back.

As we move through the sequences, the GRP mat maintains its, well, grip. Even 30 minutes in, when it’s polka-dotted with moisture, I’m still not slipping. Score.

Crow? Why not? Frog hops? I’ve got this. Tripod headstand? Sure!

Its Really Comfortable For Your Joints

ì§ìí¼ ë?¼ì?´í¸ ìê° ë§¤í¸ 4mm

The GRP mat comes in two thickness options, the regular 6mm and the “lite” 4mm. It really depends on your preference, but I use the 6mm for a little bit of extra comfort. And even a little bit of extra padding makes a huge difference on your knees, palms, back, or whatever might be taking the bulk of your weight on the ground. The 4mm is still perfectly usable, but I like the feel of really pampering myself while working hard. Yoga should be a rejuvenating experience, so its something of a treat to not walk away with sore knees. The ease of comfort and the absorption have made me a more confident yogi. I feel like that with a solid base, my practice has deeply improved, making it simpler to try new balance poses or deeper binds.

The Sweat Absorption Is Key

The main issue with my previous yoga matand my main frustration with the practicewas the sweat from a demanding, hot workout. On a regular mat, when you sweat, it pools right there on the surface, meaning any sort of grip you had for balance postures is pretty much non-existent. Thats not a thing at all with Mandukas hot yoga mat. The non-slip top layer combined with a charcoal-infused rubber core means the GRP absorbs any amount of sweat. And, as a guy who sweats a lot during yoga, this mat truly does the trick. In the hottest, most demanding conditions, I never lost a bit of grip on my hands or feet. In fact, I feel like it worked better when it was slightly damp. No longer do I stress about getting too hot and losing focus while trying to not slip around everywhere.

One thing that is also key about this material is that it doesnt show dirt or marks easily, and it doesnt smell like other towels that are taking in your sweat. And, like every other yoga mat that is simple plastic, this one is easy to clean with a simple wipe down, even if it is absorbing moisture.

A Few Things You Need To Know About The Grp Adapt In Particular:

Manduka eKO Lite Yoga Mat Review (in-depth review)

1. The GRP Adapt scuffs easily. Because of that rubbery surface, when turning my heel from Warrior 2 to standing forward bend, prasarita padottanasana, I literally caused friction scuff on the surface of the mat. On my first practice on this mat. So Im not sure how durable this is gonna be already.

2. GRP Adapt is squeaky. Because its so sticky, grippy and rubbery, it actually squeaks when you move on it. Seriously, its like practising on a rubber wellington boot.

Check this yoga video I made – and every now and then you can hear the squeak when my hands and feet move positions. Maybe thats not such a big deal, but I find it kinda distracting. And in a studio situation Id feel self-conscious about it, and maybe thats just me. Maybe you do vinyasa classes with loud music, so no one will hear it. But its something you should know about.

3. GRP Adapt is a dust magnet. I dont know why – maybe coz its so sticky or coz its black so dust shows up more easily? I dont have the same issue with the GRP Lite or even my Manduka PRO black mat when I leave them out. The Adapt seems to attract dust, so I find myself Swiffering it often.

Note: The scuffing, squeaking and dust attraction are only from the Adapt, I dont have those issues on the Lite.
