Teaching Yoga In Inner

Yoga in schools.mov

Kripalu Yoga teacher Deborah Cohen has two passions: yoga and teaching children. So when a Boston public school came to her wanting a yoga program for its inner-city students, Debbie was crushed to have to tell them she couldnt do it.

I couldnt afford to go out there and teach yoga, and I felt so bummed about that, she recalls.

Because she wasnt in a position at that point in her career to volunteer her time, the idea of a yoga program in the inner-city schools went onto Debbies back burner, for another time.

Debbie has been teaching yoga for 15 years, but it was just three years ago that she was able to combine her passion for yoga and her passion for teaching children when she joined forces with the Kripalu Institute for Extraordinary Living. Working closely with Institute faculty, she helped develop and implement their Kripalu Yoga in the Schools curriculum, testing it at Waltham High School. But she still felt something lacking.

I always wanted to be in the inner-city schools, Debbie says, particularly in the Boston public school system, which so desperately wantedand neededa yoga program. To make this dream a reality, Debbie created the Susan E. Tift Yoga in Schools Program Fund in honor of the passing of one of her longtime yoga students.

The good news is this bigger responsibility provides states and school districts with increased flexibility in terms of how to spend federal funding. For a detailed description of the similarities and differences between ESSA and NCLB, check out this article from understood.org.

Title IV, Part A of ESSA recently combined several smaller programs such as the math and science partnership, safe and drug free schools, and counseling into one flexible block grant for states. Combining these smaller programs resulted in a big funding increase, with congress initially authorized $1.8B for fiscal year 2018 through the fiscal year 2021 with an additional 1.2B for FY22.

How To Find Funding For School Yoga Programs

May 3, 2022·

We have heard a lot from our Kids Yoga Stories community about the challenges of securing funds for your school yoga and mindfulness programs.

The major benefit of yoga and mindfulness is that it costs nothing to take a few breaths and move your body into various postures. However, there are some wonderful props and materials that can make your experience fun and interesting for your students.

You may like to purchase yoga mats, yoga dots, props, or yoga resources. Many teachers pay for resources out of pocket or rely on free or donated materials to keep the cost down. But many others find financial backing without too much trouble.

Some things to consider if you are looking to purchase materials:

  • How much money do I need?
  • How can I get buy-in from the school administration?
  • Do I need to write a proposal?
  • How can I prove the value of the materials?
  • Where can I find funding?
  • Today, we will explore some of these potential options where you might be able to find funding for school yoga programs. It might be worth asking around to see if others have ideas, as well.

    Yoga As A Learning Tool

All three programs use movement as an integrative method for learning. When you give yoga poses, use visualization, and allow them to move their bodies, their whole learning ability goes up several notches, says Marsha Wenig, founder of YogaKids. Yoga Ed.s Kalish agrees that children learn best by doing. When you teach kids, its not about telling themits about creating experiences for them where they connect the dots, and create new dots.

The YogaKids program helps children learn how to control their energy so that they can focus and concentrate better, adds Amy Haysman, coordinator of the program. It teaches breathing techniques and poses that help them think more clearly. For example, bunny breath, short inhalations through the nose and a long exhale through the mouth, can energize kids who need to get focused in order to take a test. Haysman has been hired by schools in Georgia to incorporate yoga into academic classes and physical education programs. In one program, called Reading Comes Alive with Yoga, teachers take a book, picture, or story and practice yoga poses associated with animals or objects in the story. It helps the kids feel like theyre not passively listening. Its interactive, Haysman says.
