Mountain Pose With Salutation Seal


1 minute, 8-10 breaths

With your feet together or hip-width apart, inhale and reach your arms skyward, externally rotating your upper arms as you stretch tall. On an exhale, bring your hands to your heart center in Anjali Mudra, with your palms together. Take a moment to stand here with your eyes closed and shoulders relaxed, breathing deeply for 45 breaths or until you feel grounded and centered.

2 minutes, 16-20 breaths

Facing the long-edge side of your mat, extend your arms out to the sides, palms down. Step your feet wide, about the span between your wrists, with the outer edges of your feet parallel with your mat. Turn your right toes to the short-edge side of the mat and your left toes in slightly. Inhale to lift your chest as you exhale, bend your right knee, tracking it over your ankle. Push into the outer edge of the back foot to find stability as you try to distribute your weight evenly through both feet. Breathe here for 45 breaths, then change sides.

Standing Half Forward Bend

Forward folding poses help relieve tension in your neck, shoulders and back, while improving flexibility and range of motion. I chose to include a half forward bend instead of a full one because a lot of beginners have very tight hamstrings, making it hard to completely fold. Half Forward Bend also helps you remember to keep a straight back in this pose and program you to keep your chest lifted when you attempt full forward folds.

How to do Standing Half Forward Bend:

  • Start in Mountain Pose. To help you maintain proper alignment, place your hands on your hips.
  • Actively engage you core and stand tall. Push your chest up and forward.
  • Start to hinge forward at your hips while keep your back straight and head in line with your body. Fold into your body as much as you can without collapsing your chest, and then drop your hands to your calves or the floor.
  • Lengthen through your spine, being mindful of keeping a straight back, and look slightly forward.
