The science and research in support of yogas many positive benefits is becoming undeniable. Yoga has been proven to effectively treat many conditions, including physical rehabilitation, PTSD, anxiety, and depression. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health even released a video on the Scientific Results of Yoga for Health and Well-Being. Additionally, in 2010, Medicare approved the Ornish Program for Heart Disease as a form of intensive cardiac rehab. The Ornish program teaches participants the importance of a meatless, plant-based diet, regular exercise, yoga, meditation, and social support.

However, youll be hard-pressed to find health insurance that covers yoga as a treatment for any other condition other than heart disease, as it is still widely associated with fitness and appearance instead of an avenue towards healing.

But, as weve discussed in previous blogs, YogaMedics is not yoga therapy and not recreational yoga (if you didnt catch that blog post, you can

read it here!). But because YogaMedics therapy is used for rehabilitation purposes, there are still several ways to have your insurance company foot the bill.

If youre a Veteran, we have good news: YogaMedics is contracted with the department of defense and currently works out of Detroits VA hospital. Our services are included in your existing benefits!

Does The Federal Government Have Resources That Might Help With Health

Currently, federal health assistance programs are not set up to assist with alternative medicine expenses.

They are intended to provide either direct support or indirect support to people whom the government determines to be in need.

Examples include people who:

  • Have a low income and limited resources
  • Do not have other medical insurance
  • Have a disability
  • Are part of a population that has difficulty accessing medical care
  • Are at least 65 years of age
  • Have served in the military

There are federal databases on the Internet that can introduce you to these programs. Benefits.gov provides an overview and a self-test to help you identify whether any benefits are appropriate for your needs. FirstGov has information on various health-related programs such as Medicare and Medicaid.

As part of its research, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health does conduct clinical trials of some alternative medicine treatments.

If Therapies Work Wont They Be Allowed Back

The changes have a number of structural problems.

There is no formal process for updating the list as evidence evolves. This means therapies remain prohibited until legislated otherwise and other therapies cannot be added easily.

Meanwhile, the review is already out of date. It examined systematic reviews published between 2008 and 2013, and did not review original research at all. Search criteria for the review were narrow and may not have reflected practice. The review excluded evidence for individual herbal medicines, for example, as it did not believe this evidence was relevant to the practice of herbalism.

Meta-analyses now show yoga to be effective in conditions such as diabetes and back pain. Yoga is now recommended as a first-line treatment for low back pain in the United Kingdom. And NATO recommends military health services use yoga for post-traumatic stress disorder and back pain.

This legislation makes similar programs almost impossible to replicate in Australia.

At the very least, the Department of Health should update the review to ensure the evidence on which they have based this decision is current.

We need an evidence-based approach to natural therapies. But these changes hamper access to therapies known to work, encourage therapies known not to work, and reduce researchers ability to investigate what does and doesnt work.

How Much Does Massage Therapy Coverage Cost

Like all benefits, the more coverage a policy offers, the more its likely to cost. The cost will vary by insurer.

Signing up for health insurance through an employer can save you money. Thats because the employer will often pay part of the cost of the premium for you. It may also offer health insurance plans with more benefits, like massage therapy.

If the massage is considered rehabilitative or is medically necessary, then insurance will not cost you more. It may fall under the coverage of the Affordable Care Acts 10 essential health benefits.

The Change In Health Insurance

The way that things used to be regarding health insurance providers were that they would not cover the cost of a gym membership, never mind a yoga membership.

A health insurance plan was initially constructed in a manner to help you with doctors appointments, hospital stays, physical therapy, etc. Consumer demand changed things though in the 1990s and health insurance providers were forced to adapt to that alteration.

The change that was initially seen was in the subsidization of gym memberships. The way that this would work is that you would get credit, typically annually, that would be able to help pay for a gym membership in your community.

We have all see the big chain gyms pop up across the United States with a tag that they cost $10 per month with no commitment and no money down. Why would they charge such a low price do you think? It is all due to health insurance changes!

The typical reimbursement or subsidization that health insurance providers used to give was $120 annually. If you were to go to that gym that charges the $10 per month, you would be able to cover your full membership through what your health insurance provider would be paying back to you.

This makes it almost a no brainer to keep that gym membership, even if you do not intend to go as routinely as you probably want to.

Questions To Ask About Massage Therapy Coverage

If you learn that your insurer covers massage therapy, ask these questions so you will understand how your policy will cover it:

  • What are the conditions to qualify for reimbursement?
  • Is there is a deductible or any out-of-pocket cost to you?
  • Is there is a maximum amount payable per policy term/year?
  • Is there a maximum reimbursement per visit? For example, if the maximum per visit is $90, and you use a massage therapist who will charge $150, you will not be able to claim the full amount.
  • Is there a time limit per body region?
  • Are there specific massage therapists you must go to?
  • Do all types of massage qualify for coverage?

What Can I Expect At My First Physical Therapy Visit

Yoga Is My Health Insurance

Your first physical therapy appointment will last about one hour. It will include an initial evaluation consisting of the physical therapist taking a medical history, discussing your goals taking strength and range of motion measurements, and performing special tests to determine what structures are contributing to your issue. From there, the physical therapist will discuss the findings and work with you to develop a treatment plan. You may be given an initial home exercise program, receive manual therapy or review education materials on your first visit.

If you are coming in with a pelvic health related diagnosis such as incontinence, internal pelvic pain or post-prostate surgical complications, your therapist may recommend an internal pelvic exam on the first visit. If you prefer not to have an internal exam, you can decline and your therapist will still be able to help you towards achieving your goals. An internal pelvic exam gives your therapist valuable information about strength, muscle tone, coordination and endurance of the pelvic musculature and soft tissues.

Your initial acupuncture treatment at Jade is typically about 30 minutes of patient interview and diagnosis, followed by about 60 minutes of treatment. Our licensed acupuncturists will ask a full range of questions to assess your current health as a whole. Some questions may feel unrelated to your situation, but a full, detailed picture of your overall wellbeing allows us to craft a treatment plan to meet your unique needs. Traditional diagnostic methods may include tongue inspection, pulse assessment, as well as channel and abdomen palpation.

Follow up treatments at Jade are typically 55 minutes. Your acupuncturist will check in with you on your response to the last treatment and how you are progressing prior to inserting needles. Most patients receive treatment on both sides-a face up treatment and face down treatment. You will find that this level of care is rare, but we feel it is very important!

When choosing a clinic, it is essential to know which insurance plans they accept and how much your copay or out-of-pocket cost will be. If you do not have health insurance, you will have to pay for all of your treatment out-of-pocket, so keep that fact and your budget in mind.

Insurance Through The Affordable Care Act

Plans through a state or federal health insurance marketplace dont cover yoga classes or gym membership fees. The ACA requires insurance companies to provide coverage forlab services and mental health services. It does not require insurers to cover alternative or complementary medicine, which is how yoga is usually classified.3
