The Next Step Of Your Journey

For many Americans who have attended yoga class, teachers are part personal trainers and part therapists, sometimes with a dose of psychedelic trip-sitter mixed in.

Yoga teachers touch us gently when we are pouring sweat. They free us from our phones and from the rub of zippers . They inspire us to lose weight while never mentioning it. Its transcendence and transference: Youre admiring their butts, for a noble cause.

Many also teach for very little money. Part of that is cultural: Discount or donation-based classes help attract new customers, and they also fit into the spiritual ethos. At Dharma Yoga Center in New York, for example, teachers in training learn that offering donation-based classes can be a blessing on their path to the total surrender of ego.

But it is also a result of a glut of teachers: According to a survey from 2016, there are two people in teacher training for every existing yoga teacher.

CorePower used to ask its teachers to work for free, not just as teachers-in-training, but also at the front desk in its posh in-studio boutiques, where expensive merchandise is sold, according to a 2011 lawsuit. It now pays teachers for this labor.

The pinnacle of corporate yoga, CorePower nevertheless dresses itself up as a friendly family, calling its thousands of employees a tribe. On paper the job of the instructors is to teach. But whether they get raises and promotions often depends on how well they recruit.

Yoga Teacher Trainings: Buyer Beware

CorePower Teacher Training Pyramid Scheme

UPDATE MAY 2019: I wrote this post several years ago as I was noticing an influx of newly minted teachers from big yoga flooding the market. I had heard stories of teachers at CorePower and elsewhere encouraging young, women to become yoga teachers who had little to no experience and had only done yoga in one studio in one style. I knew it was a money grab: RENT!

Rent is such a huge issue for yoga studios trying to stay afloat. They pump money into high traffic locations with decor and more: hardwood floors, fountains, mirrors, sound systems, online booking etc., but guess what? Theres nothing left over to pay qualified teachers. So what do you do? You start your own teacher training program, priced HIGHER than training in India or a stateside residential training program . This creates loads of revenue during the down-hours of the studio plus, it encourages a steady supply of cheap exploitable labor. To make matters worse, many young people were being encouraged to TAKE ON DEBT for the trainings, often to the tune of $3-5K. Nevermind they were already unemployed or under-employed. While always a CorePower skeptic, never did I imagine the level of sinister greed rampant there. The New York Times article even features a Minnesota CorePower location! COREPOWER ARTICLE HERE.

Do Online Classes Have Tests

Core Power Online Yoga Certification

Not all online classes have proctored exams. But if they do, online students may need to visit a local testing site, with an on-site proctor. They may also take virtually monitored exams online, where a proctor watches via webcam or where computer software detects cheating by checking the test-takers’ screens

A Couple Of Factors: Price Timing Insecurity

  • Price being afraid to spend thousands of dollars on a certification.

  • Timing thinking that the timing wasnt right, that I didnt have time for it.

  • Insecurity not being confident enough in my own practice, which led to believing that I could not teach others

But after becoming a boxing instructor and absolutely falling in love with teaching, I gained enough confidence to re-think teacher training. That, combined with the opening of a new studio closer to me, finding a community where I felt like home, and in general starting to be a little more spontaneous, led me to start my Yoga Sculpt Teacher Training at CorePower Yoga in March 2018.

It was simultaneously the hardest, yet most fulfilling training Id ever done.

I had finally gotten comfortable with teaching and felt confident about my abilities, only to be thrown into a completely different atmosphere with a completely new set of rules and style.

It was humbling, it was out of my comfort zone, it was difficult, but it was so worth it.

I decided shortly after completing my internship phase that I wanted to do my 200-hour power yoga training it was at the same studio where I had done my sculpt training and it was great timing.

Without thinking too much about it, I signed up. And it was another wonderful, emotional ride.

I met a group of people that I never wouldve imagined meeting, and have become so close to so many of them. Theyre a group of truly beautiful souls.
