Private Yoga Lessons For Obese Beginners

What Happens To Your Brain And Body When You Do Yoga Regularly

While in-person classes are a cost-effective solution, if you arent ready for that level of public viewing but still need some assistance and instruction, there is another way. An alternative to a full class is to take a private yoga lesson. Certified yoga instructors are often willing and able to give private yoga instruction. In this situation, a teacher can give more specific instruction that is personal to the student. If you have specific needs, physical conditions, or want to ask direct questions, having a personal instructor is ideal.;

To find a personal instructor, you can visit for yoga instructors in your area. Also, call or visit yoga studios in your area and ask about the yoga teachers. Feel free to interview some that would be able to offer exactly what you need for your yoga journey. Whether it is a reduction in stress, gaining flexibility or strength, or finding safe and effective techniques to manage back pain, a personal yoga teacher can be very helpful.

Yoga has been around for thousands of years and it continues to benefit people of all ages, races, cultures, sizes, and gender. Yoga has an open-door policy and is not restricted to any one type of individual. All you need is the desire to want to practice, and the world of yoga can be at your fingertips.

What About The Obesity Paradox

Sometime in the early 2000s, the notion of obesity having some protective cardiovascular benefits in some situations arose in scientific circles. That aforementioned Lancet meta-analysis largely puts the theory of an obesity paradox to bed, but that aside, looking at the studies supporting the paradox exposes them as rather odd. A study in the Annals of Internal Medicine on type 2 diabetes patients showed that overweight and obese people were more likely to have cardiac events, but overweight ones and not the obese ones had lower mortality rates than people of average weight. Much like the 2013 JAMA study, obese people and average people had similar mortality rates.

Confused? Me too. All you need to remember is that this was a study on people with diabetes who had cardiac events a pretty limited demographic.

Another report in Mayo Clinic Proceedings supporting the obesity paradox showed that overweight heart patients had the lowest occurrence of cardiovascular-related morality, but not overall mortality.

In other words, if you start nitpicking, you can find instances where a little extra fat had some limited benefits, but the bigger, broader studies tend to favor maintaining a normal weight.

Yoga Can Help You Manage Stress

There are many ways stress can contribute to weight gain and particularly unmanaged, chronic stress. Yoga can help lower chronic stress levels.

Breathwork and meditation are the cornerstones to yoga practice. And both contribute to boosting energy, improving mood, and lowering stress levels, says Sundar Balasubramanian, PhD, assistant professor at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, whose research focuses on how yogic breathing can promote well-being in people with chronic and other disease.

Stress can make weight loss very difficult because it can cause cortisol to rise, stress-eating, and trouble sleeping, Balasubramanian explains. Deep breathing helps undo stress and reverse some of these negative effects that can make weight loss more difficult .

There are physiological changes that happen in the body in response to breathing exercises, Balasubramanian says. Studies have shown how mindfulness exercises reduce the amount of cortisol in our bodies.

A review published in December 2017 in the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology that analyzed data from 42 studies suggested that yoga was associated with lower levels of evening cortisol, waking cortisol, resting heart rate, and cholesterol levels.

Ask The Beachbody Expert: Can You Be Overweight And Healthy

A little overweight? Maybe. But if youre leaning towards obese, the answer is, generally, no. The laundry list of ailments that accompany excess body fat grows every day: type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, and on and on.

Again, Im not talking about a few extra pounds. You can be healthy as a horse without a six-pack or that little gap skinny women have between their thighs when they wear boy shorts. If you eat a nutritious, varied diet and exercise regularly, you may not be as thin as the bikini model who lives across the street, but youre fine. Healthy comes in all shapes and sizes except maybe XXXL.

What Class Is Right For Me

There are many styles of yoga classes taught today. Some are very physically challenging and will leave you sweating; others are gentle and restorative. Some teachers play music in class; others dont. Some classes include references to yoga philosophy and spirituality; others dont.

Here are a few types of classes your yoga studio or gym may offer:

Hatha: Most yoga styles being taught in America today are a form of hatha yoga, which is a general term that refers to the physical part of yoga, rather than yoga philosophy or meditation. A Hatha yoga class is likely to be a combination of poses and breathing exercises, but its hard to know whether it will be challenging or gentle. Check with the school or the teacher to find more about the level of classes that are described only as Hatha yoga.

Ashtanga Yoga: This is a challenging style of yoga that is centered around a progressive series of yoga sequences that, traditionally, students practice on their own under the guidance of a teacher. If you think that yoga is not a workout, you havent tried an Ashtanga class. Classes include advanced poses such as arm balances and inversions including headstands and shoulder stands. Beginner students are strongly advised to study with an experienced teacher. Ashtanga classes will also often include teachings in yoga philosophy.

Note: Its a good idea to try several yoga classes. How much you enjoy any class will come down to how much you like the teacher, not how its labeled.

How To Start Yoga

Can Yoga Help You Lose Weight? It Helped This College Student Lose 80 Lbs!

The best way to learn yoga is from a qualified teacher in a yoga class. Specialized classes for bigger-bodied;students are becoming more popular, but cant be found everywhere. As the yoga establishment recognizes a need, more teachers are being trained in adaptations for larger students.

If you do not feel ready for a group class, consider booking a few private yoga sessions. This can be a great way to learn basic poses and gain the confidence to use props in an effective way before joining a group practice. Becoming knowledgeable about yoga is the best way to ensure that you will feel at ease.

If these options aren’t available to you, you’ll probably have the most positive experience from your first yoga classes in a beginners level gentle Hatha practice. Kripalu, Viniyoga, and Integral are also good choices, if available, because the teachers are trained to work with differing abilities and body types. Chair yoga is also a possibility for those with limited mobility.

Abby Lentz, the founder of Heavyweight Yoga in Austin, Texas, suggests speaking to the teacher before your first yoga class to ensure that you are comfortable and the teacher will be prepared to offer modifications and props as necessary.

Choosing The Right Yoga Style For Your Size

If weight loss is part of your plan and movement is not an issue, choose a more vigorous style of yoga that amps up your cardiovascular system while improving mobility and flexibility.Using a balance ball as mentioned earlier will also help to improve flexibility and balance.

Kundalini or Hatha yoga are great styles for revving up the heat in the body and stoking your internal fat burning furnace. Practicing yoga for fat loss is a goal that many people begin with, only to find out that there are other mental and physical benefits that improve health in equally impressive ways.

Pick a style of yoga that works with your body composition and body type; as you begin to improve your health and fitness, you can also modify your practice to reflect your current fitness level.

Should I Use Props When I Practice Yoga

Props, particularly blocks and chairs, are great resources for curvy yogis. Using blocks is helpful for beginner and experienced yogis alike so dont feel that using your blocks diminishes your practice.

Blocks aid in reaching the best alignment for you which ultimately leads to better form and joint benefits.

For those whose weight makes mobility increasingly challenging, chair yoga provides another option to have a practice. As the name suggests, chair yoga takes place primarily seated in a chair.

Practicing chair yoga provides a number of health benefits such as improved flexibility and strength and can be a great entry point for less mobile beginners.

Tips For Getting Started With Yoga

1. Be Aware of Your limits: When first going into yoga, it is important to approach it with a realistic understanding of your capabilities and limitations. It may be required that you first consult your primary care physician to help ensure you do not overdo your regimen based on physical and health-related limitations that you may have. If you do start yoga, embrace your limitations and encourage yourself rather than being critical. If you need to use equipment such as a chair, do it with a positive attitude and count each small step toward better flexibility and strength as an accomplishment worth celebrating!

2. Accept Your Limitations: It is one thing to be aware of what your body can or cant do, but what is more important is to accept and support it. If you are perhaps older and know that your joints cannot take on a certain pose, put your body first and work around it. This will lead to better results for you in the long run.

3. Love Yourself and Your Body: Dont take this journey for superficial or negative reasons. Do this for yourself! Smile in the mirror, and let self-love spread throughout your mind and body. Yoga is based on inner harmony. So embrace that inner harmony and treat yourself with compassion both internally and externally.

Slow Down While Performing The Yoga Asanas

Yoga For Overweight Beginners Guide

Written by Tania Tarafdar | Updated : December 28, 2016 6:47 PM IST

Slim women are always the picture of yoga that marketers want to sell. That makes most of us who are a little obese or overweight feel extremely conscious and under confident in a yoga class. But the fact is yoga isn t just for the ones who are flexible and in shape. If you are overweight, these tips from yoga expert Anandi Mahajan can help you feel comfortable practising yoga.

Think you are working harder than others: It will help you feel more at ease if you think of your body weight as the weight that will help you workout better and yield more results. If you are 30kg more than others in your yoga class, you will work harder to do those arm balances and backbends, burning more calories during the workout.

Perform slow-paced yoga forms: We are conditioned to think that we need to exercise hard and fast to make it count. While faster yoga forms like vinyasa flow can help burn calories, slowing down can help. Slower yoga forms improve flexibility and strength while balancing the nervous system and flushing out toxins from your body, helping you lose weight. Slow yoga styles like yin yoga can have more benefits for you. Here are 21 yoga variations you can try.

What Makes Buddha Body Yoga Unique

A traditional yoga class might be challengingor even unwelcomingfor larger or injured individuals. However, Hayes didnt want this to stop people from experiencing the many health benefits of yoga.

Yoga increases flexibility, creates a feeling of well-being, changes movement and thought patterns, develops better proprioception, says Hayes. But it is, frankly, often beyond the ability of most physically large, overweight, or rotund people, or people with injuries. Thats where Buddha Body Yoga comes in.

Adaptations are a normal part of yoga: In most yoga classes, yogis are encouraged to know their bodies and use modified poses when necessary to avoid injury. However, there might be some peer pressure at some studios, and some people may feel ashamed to use a modification if they notice nobody else in the class needs the adjustment.

At Buddha Body Yoga, adaptations are not just offered, but built into the class. Modifying poses helps make the class safer and more welcoming to overweight or injured yoga practitioners.

The adaptations include using a number of props, such as bolsters, pillows, blocks, belts, yoga ropes, and physioballs. Yoga props can help achieve certain poses while preventing strain on joints or muscles. Some props act like an extension of the body or as a support .

Yoga Styles That Dont Involve Getting On The Floor

There are styles of yoga for people who cant get to the floor, such as the Yin style, which relies on passive poses that work with your own body weight to improve strength and flexibility; most of these are done in a sitting or reclining position.

Kripalu, another type of physically passive yoga, focuses on relaxation and meditation as part of the practice, which promotes mental health that can contribute to physical well being.

Yoga And Calorie Burning

While yoga isnt traditionally considered an aerobic exercise, there are certain types of yoga that are more physical than others.

Active, intense styles of yoga help you burn the most calories. This may help prevent weight gain. Ashtanga, vinyasa, and power yoga are examples of more physical types of yoga.

Vinyasa and power yoga are usually offered at hot yoga studios. These types of yoga keep you moving almost constantly, which helps you to burn calories.

Practicing yoga may also help you develop muscle tone and improve your metabolism.

While restorative yoga isnt an especially physical type of yoga, it still helps in weight loss. One study found that restorative yoga was effective in helping overweight women to lose weight, including abdominal fat.

These findings are especially promising for people whose body weight may make more vigorous forms of yoga difficult.

A review of studies from 2013 found that yoga is a promising way to help with behavioral change, weight loss, and maintenance by burning calories, heightening mindfulness, and reducing stress. These factors may help you to reduce food intake and become aware of the effects of overeating.

More in-depth, high-quality studies are needed to expand on these findings.

Oh And One More Thing: You Can Leave A Class Anytime You Want

You can be fat and happy | Sofie Hagen | TEDxLondonWomen

Personally, I think live yoga classes sometimes feel like psychological minefields. Never forget that youre free to leave at any point. If youre in a yoga environment that feels fatphobic and oppressive, you have my permission to bounce at any moment, for any reason. And its even easier to do that now, in a time of virtual and online yoga classes.

I like to remind myself that anyone who makes me feel like I dont deserve to be practicing yoga is really just reflecting their own internal bullshit. Dont shame yourself for being susceptible to self-hate; it happens to all of us. But try to remind yourself that youre not practicing yoga for anyone but you, and youre free to ignore every other human being in the building so long as youre able to dive headfirst into your yoga practice.

Vigorous postural yoga, like the type I teach on The Underbelly, is hard, but not because youre fat. Its hard for everyone. Its supposed to be hardas far as Im concerned, its kicking the shit out of you so you can let go of your emotional baggage. When your physical body is distracted by complex yoga poses, youre able to reach a level of inner chill thats kinda hard to achieve otherwise. Be patient with yourself, and treat yourself with the loving compassion you would show to your dearest friend. Remember that you are your dearest friend, and youll never meet anyone who can love you the way you can.
