To Improve Mood And Relaxation
As exercise, yoga is a natural way to increase serotonin production. According to the study also suggests people with depression have lower serotonin levels.
Yoga is also especially helpful because of its gentle, calming, and fluid nature. Each pose is flexible, so people of all levels can practice. Your instructor will emphasize breathing, concentration, and smooth movement. Theyll also encourage you to focus on positive images to calm the body and mind.

One limitation in the study is that there was no control group, so the researchers couldnt assess how the yoga treatments compared to participants who didnt do yoga or who did a different kind of intervention, like exercise. Another is that the sample size is quite small.
But another, larger study out earlier this month found that just 35 minutes of exercise per day significantly reduced the risk of having a depressive episode in those who were at higher genetic risk of depression. Among 8,000 participants, each four-hour chunk of weekly exercise reduced the risk of a future depressive episode by 17%. Even low-intensity forms of exerciselike yogawere effective.
Yogas benefits, however, dont seem to be solely derived from the physical aspects. Especially when coupled with breath exercises, yoga seems to tap into the same brain networks as meditationand lots of research has shown that the practice affects the stress response, changes reactivity to fear, and even quiets the self-referential centers of the brain, which appear to be particularly active in people with depression and anxiety. Slow breathing alone has been shown to affect a subgroup of brain cells responsible for calm behavior, which may also be part of why yoga and meditation are effective for certain mental health issues.
More work will probably be needed before specific doses of yoga are prescribed for mental health, but it can certainly be used in conjunction with other, tried-and-true treatments.
Why Yoga Can Help With Depression And Anxiety
Yoga is a gentle form of physical exercise, and through exercise the body releases feel-good hormones called endorphins which can help to relieve anxiety and boost mood in people with mild to moderate depression.
Studies support this finding that a lack of exercise can have a negative impact on mental health, contributing to poor sleep, anxiety, stress and low mood.
But the meditative and mindfulness aspects of yoga may also help to ease symptoms of depression and anxiety. Mindfulness encourages you to focus on the present moment using techniques like breathing and meditation – 2 practices used in yoga – which can help to make you more aware of stress or anxiety symptoms.
So the key elements of yoga – mindfulness, breathing, stretching and exercise – when combined can help to improve both physical and mental health.

Research On Yoga And Depression

While the number of studies on yoga and depression are increasing, there are still many questions about how to research the topic. Here are some of the reasons research on the impact yoga can have on depression is complicated:
- Some studies include individuals who feel depressed but arent necessarily diagnosed with depression.
- There are many different types of yoga which makes comparing studies more complicated.
- Yoga likely affects each population in a slightly different manner.
Some research has been conducted on specific populations, such as women or expectant mothers. Heres what studies reveal about how yoga can affect depression in these specific populations.

Some studios may even offer a variety of styles, such as Vinyasa in a heated room, or aerial yoga. Aerial yoga is supported yoga in the air. You do the poses in a cloth hammock. Your instructor will be able to show you how to adjust your body for poses that may be more difficult for beginners.
If you prefer doing yoga in a private setting, you can try one-on-one therapy with a yoga instructor or do yoga by yourself at home while watching an instructional video.
Where Did The Story Come From
The study was carried out by researchers from Boston University School of Medicine, Harvard School of Medicine, Boston Medical Centre, McLean Hospital, Memorial Veterans Hospital, New York Medical College, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Columbia University, all in the US.
It was funded by grants from Boston University.
The study was published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine and is free to read online .
The Mail Online story reports the facts of the study accurately, but inflates their importance, stating that the study “proves” yoga can “cure” depression, and saying the practice “could even be a replacement for antidepressant drugs”.
But the researchers don’t make such a claim themselves, and the story fails to point out that the lack of a comparison group means we can’t assume the reduction in depression was caused by yoga.

Can Yoga Form Part Of Treatment For Depression
Depression is a complex illness that affects people in different ways, so a one-size-fits-all approach to treatment wont be effective.
But there are ways in which yoga could be beneficial as part of a range of options to improve mental wellbeing.
For example, physical illness can lead to the development of mental health problems, so staying active can help to maintain your mental health generally and this is increasingly being recognised by healthcare professionals.
Doctors in the UK are starting to prescribe exercise for people with depression and anxiety, instead of just medication or talking therapies like cognitive behavioural therapy , according to the mental health charity Mind.
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is also recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence in the UK to help prevent depression in people who have experienced the condition on 3 or more occasions in the past. This form of therapy aims to make you more aware of negative thoughts and to deal with those thoughts in a constructive way.
We know that physical activity is good for both our mental and physical health, and that lots of people find meditation, mindfulness and breathing exercises helpful, especially people who experience problems with anxiety and panic attacks, says Stephen Buckley, Head of Information at Mind.

How Did The Researchers Interpret The Results
The researchers say their study “provides evidence that participation in an intervention composed of Iyengar yoga and coherent breathing is associated with a significant reduction in depressive symptoms for individuals with major depressive disorder.”
They note that people taking three classes a week said it “entailed a demanding time commitment” and concluded that, “Although the thrice-weekly classes had significantly more subjects with BDI-II scores 10 at week 12, the twice-weekly classes may constitute a less burdensome but still effective way to gain the mood benefits from the intervention.”

While you might think stretching, breathing, and focusing on your posture cant possibly improve your psychological well-being, theres growing evidence that yoga can be effective in reducing depression.
Traditional treatment for depression usually involves a combination of psychotherapy and medication. But not everyone responds well to these types of evidence-based treatments. Only one-third of individuals receive relief from their first trial with antidepressants.
In recent years, there has been a growing interest in mind-body practices that can improve psychological well-being. Yoga, in particular, has shown a sharp increase in popularity over the last decade. One study found that the percentage of the US population who had practiced yoga increased from 5.8% in 2002 to 10.1% in 2012.
There are many studies that have found yoga can decrease symptoms of depression. In fact, some studies have found that yoga is just as effective as antidepressants and exercise in reducing symptoms of depression.
Researchers found that yoga provides immediate relief as well as long-term symptom reduction. It also decreases symptom severity and increases treatment remission rates.

Why Use Yoga As A Adjunct Treatment For Depression
Depression is such a varied and complex illness that a one size fits all approach is unlikely to be fully effective for a significant proportion of patients. People with depression often have to weigh up the benefits of antidepressants with their well-reported side effects. Unfortunately, the fact that depression is still far from being entirely understood means that there is no perfect solution.
Within the context of pharmaceutical and other therapeutic remedies, yoga therapy can assist people in symptom management and recovery and in cases of mild depression, it can be their primary self-help tool which prevents their symptoms from worsening.
Yoga-based interventions have promise as an intervention for depressed mood and that they are feasible for patients with chronic, treatment-resistant depression

People with depression exhibit elevated levels of cortisol, which is related to brain changes in the hippocampus, prefrontal cortex and amygdala. While the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex appear to lose volume, the amygdala becomes enlarged and more active . Known as the stress hormone, those with depression exhibit greater cortisol levels at all points during the day than people without depression.

Though yoga wasnt exactly developed to treat depression and anxiety, research has shown that for some people, it does seem to be fairly good at it. A new study from researchers at the Boston University School of Medicine, New York Medical College, and Harvard and Columbia Universities, finds that people who are assigned to take high or low doses of yoga that includes breath exercises have improved mental health at the end of three months.
The study was published this week in the Journal of Psychiatric Practice.
The researchers split 32 participants with major depressive disorder into two groups: the high-dose group would take a 90-minute yoga class that included coherent breathing three times a week, and do four 30-minute yoga sessions at home each week. The low-dose group was to take two yoga classes and do three at-home sessions. The respective treatments each lasted 12 weeks.
Most of the measures improved in both groups: Positivity, tranquility, symptoms of anxiety and depression, physical exhaustion, and sleep quality all ameliorated over the 12 weeks. The improvements were more evident in the high-dose yoga group than the low-dose group, which suggests, in pharma lingo, a dose-dependent relationship.

Mindfulness And Yoga For Anxiety
An increasing number of studies show that mindfulness practices like yoga ease stress. They do so by encouraging us to witness our emotions from a distance rather than getting caught up in them.
When practicing mindfulness, teens observe their thoughts and feelings without self-judgment. Moreover, mindfulness helps teens focus on their current experience. Hence, mindfulness exercises provide freedom from past regrets and also from nagging fears of the future.
In addition, mindfulness practices like yoga and meditation calm the limbic system. The limbic system ignites primitive drives and catalyzes risk-taking behaviors. Plus, mindfulness enhances the work of the prefrontal cortex, which makes decisions and regulates emotions. Therefore, yoga poses for anxiety also increase self-regulation in teens.
Yoga for teens supports the mind-body connection. This is a link that is increasingly broken for young people. The typical habits of todays teens include massive tech consumption and less time spent outdoors. Synchronizing breath and movement on the mat helps heal that disconnect, cultivating a deeper awareness of ones internal state.

At Red Mountain Colorado, yoga is not just a form of physical activity it is used as a tool to help in the recovery process. Two mornings a week, students have the chance to participate in yoga therapy before their school day starts, which helps them ground and go into the classroom feeling more focused.
