Calculate Your Basal Metabolic Rate
BMR is how many calories your body expends in a resting mode. Your BMR depends on your sex, weight, height, etc.
Dont worry you dont have to do any math to calculate your calorie expenditure since Ive done it for you. Simply input all your data in the fields required, and the calculator below will give you the estimate.
- have a standing job
- work out
- 1.55 if you do strength training 4-5 times a week and lead an active lifestyle
- 1.73 if youre a professional sportsperson.
The final number of calories you get at this step is how much your body needs each day to maintain its current weight.
If you want to lose weight, you need to get into a calorie deficit. This means you will have to slowly lower your calorie intake or rev up your fitness routine, or better do both.
How Much Time Do I Need To Spend Practicing Yoga To See Benefits
Yoga is one of those things you can do for hours and get benefits from, and its also one of those things you can do for 10 minutes and see some benefits from, Crockford said. Ten minutes of stretching, meditation and breathwork at the beginning of your day can be really beneficial. Even a little bit of yoga can help support your weight-loss efforts.
If you already exercise, yoga can support your cardiovascular and strength-training workouts. Yoga can give the body a chance to recover and address the stress that comes from other forms of physical activity, Crockford said. Yoga can be a good way to fill the tank back up so you have that energy, mobility and flexibility to continue with your other workouts.
Crockford said a lot of people have told her they cant do yoga because they arent flexible. She said, Thats a little bit like saying, I cant take a shower because Im too dirty. If you would like to be more flexible, have more mobility, have a better mood state, have reduced anxiety and have reduced blood pressure, yoga is a great way to do that.
Which Yoga Practices Are Best For Weight Loss
If you’re looking for pure calorie burn, our experts agreed that fast-paced Vinyasa yoga is the practice to choose. “A good Vinyasa class will take you through a variety of movements, with a focus on integrating your core and weight-bearing on your hands and feet,” Heimann explained. Imagine a classic yoga sequence, in which you flow from high plank to Chaturanga Dandasana to Upward-Facing Dog â you’re getting a core burn, working your triceps, then using your arms to hold up your bodyweight as you stretch. This kind of weight-bearing move “increases heart rate and builds muscle,” Janda told POPSUGAR. Building muscle boosts your metabolism, which helps you burn calories even after you’re done exercising.
Power yoga is another good choice, Numbers told POPSUGAR, though it’s more intense, so beginners might want to work up to it. “In power yoga, there is less meditation and more of a focus on standing poses and faster-paced movement,” she explained. Your heart will pump even harder than in a Vinyasa class, which is good news for losing weight Janda recommended aiming for a heart rate that’s 55 to 85 percent of your maximum to get the most calories burned out of a class.

Sarvangasana Shoulder Stand Pose
Sarvangasana comes with multiple benefits, from increasing your strength to improving digestion. But it is known for boosting metabolism and balancing thyroid levels.
Sarvangasana or the shoulder stand strengthens the upper body, abdominal muscles, and legs, improves the respiratory system, and improves sleep.
Flexibility Mobility & Joint Or Back Pain
The flexibility and mobility gains are one of the major benefits of doing yoga vs other forms of exercise.
If youre tight and want to limber up or want to make your body more pliable as you age, yoga is definitely the way to go.
Can you see major progress in regard to flexibility in just one month of yoga practice?
Definitely! In fact, this is probably what youll notice the most within your first 30 days.
Tim Bigknee writes: With consistent effort you can see improvements in flexibility in just a few days of your yoga journey.
Our muscles have significant muscle memory which means that with regular stretching both joint pain and flexibility should be improved. Those who are unable to touch their toes at the beginning of the month should notice an improvement after 30 days, if not less.
Alexandra Ellis adds that your first month of yoga will be extremely challenging if youre tight from sitting at a desk all day, but the rewards will be worth it:
The long-held stretches typical in yoga help to relax muscles and fascia. If youve been struggling with lower back pain or neck tension and headaches, yoga is a beneficial way to bring relief to these areas.
If your muscles are tight and inflexible due to immobility, 30 days is absolutely enough to notice yourself going deeper into poses. I have seen students gain inches with their forward folds in that amount of time, writes instructor Amanda Webster.

What Kind Of Yoga Helps With Weight Loss
If you’ve never done yoga before, be sure to start with beginner-level classes. You’ll burn the most calories in athletic vinyasa classes. These styles usually start with a fast-paced series of poses called sun salutations, followed by a flow of standing poses which will keep you moving. Once you are warmed up, deeper stretches and backbends are introduced. Vinyasa includes many popular, sweaty yoga styles, such as:
Provides a more vigorous workout
Often follows sequence of set poses
Poses range from standing to seated
Great for burning calories
Focused on slow and gentle stretching
Appropriate for all ages and fitness levels
Helps to connect mind and body
Encourages meditative relaxation
Gentle yoga, while burning fewer calories, is still a great way to nurture and care for your body.
- Hatha Yoga: While not all Hatha classes are gentle, the term has come to be used by yoga studios to indicate classes that are NOT vinyasa. Ask at your studio or gym.
- Integral Yoga: Just as the name suggests, Integral is all about integrating the body and mind with the goal of living a happier life. This is an approach that can greatly benefit people who feel dissociated from their bodies.
- Kripalu Yoga: Kripalu is a style that is known for its open acceptance of all levels of practice and body types. Its individualized approach has made it a top choice for people who are nervous about attending group classes.
A Workout You’ll Enjoy
One of the most important factors in promoting successful weight loss is finding a form of exercise that you enjoy doing. The primary reason why so many people’s weight loss plans fail is due to the fact that they dread their workouts, which usually causes them to give up after only a couple of weeks. This makes it critical that you find something that you enjoy doing so that you feel motivated to continue working out on a regular basis. For many people, infrared hot yoga is a great workout option as not only does it work, but since many people find that infrared hot yoga helps them to relax and stay centered, yogis often find themselves looking forward to their infrared hot yoga session. You may then find that hot yoga is the exercise routine that you are able to stick to due to the improved sense of well-being it can provide.
Yoga enthusiasts across the country are finding that infrared hot yoga is helping them to lose weight and lead healthier lives. Contact us to learn more about infrared hot yoga as well as to sign up for an infrared hot yoga class in Wellington Florida.

Eat More Sattvic Foods
Sattvic diet is based on Ayurveda a traditional medicine system from the Indian subcontinent. It primarily includes whole, unprocessed foods such as fruits and vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts.
According to Ayurveda, meals prepared with these foods increase your energy and mental clarity rather than make you feel like falling asleep on the couch. Sugar, meat, and heavily processed food are hard to digest and do the opposite.
Keep in mind that drinks can also be classified as sattvic . Opt for clean water and herbal tea and cut down on fizzy sugar-loaded drinks, alcohol, and caffeine.

Balance A Yogic Lifestyle With Mild Indulgence
Most yogis fall off the path at some point or another, so dont beat yourself up if youve been consistent for a while and then skipped a day or a week of yoga.
Many people may quit or punish themselves with overeating, a night out at the bar, or by using drugs, but this is not a helpful approach, and will, in fact, hinder your progress.
Instead, recognize that you have gone off the path for a while, and without judgment, come back to it.
Remember the aspects of yoga that make you feel good. Practicing yoga and being healthy is rewarding. It is not meant to stress you out or feel like a chore.
The balance of healthy living and mild indulgence is helpful for staying consistent.
If you are known, for example, to watch a lot of TV or play video games for hours, substitute some of those hours for yoga and preparing a healthy, plant-based meal. You can still save an hour or two to watch your favorite TV show or play a video game with your friends.
This way, you will see gradual weight loss results and improved health without feeling deprived or punished for your other hobbies.
This will also help you to stay on the yoga path, enjoy it, and not have a resentful attitude towards a healthy lifestyle.
It Changed The Way I Think
Yoga transformed me from the inside outand in that order. The practice led me down the rabbit hole of truth, consciousness, and connectedness, and I became more self-aware. I was able to disconnect from the ego, also known as that incessant little voice in your mind that constantly dwells on problems.
Since the ego clings to unhealthy attachments, it is responsible for fueling bad decision-making. When my mind was tamed through a consistent yoga practice, I became liberated from identifying with the same old sad stories that the ego had been using for far too long. When I stopped living obsessively in my head, positive change followed.
Through my yoga practice, the things that used to please me just no longer cut it. I came to understand that destructive habits no longer served my ultimate goal. This awakening directly affects weight loss, because it encourages the elimination of unhealthy habits.
I quickly came to realize that detrimental behaviors did not please my soul. For example, eating until I was so full that I could barely move and had to unbutton my pants, or drinking to the point where I could barely stand up no longer felt good. In fact, it felt pretty bad!
When I got to this point of detachment in my practice, I realized that instead of identifying with the ego and allowing it to dominate my life, I begin to realize that I was the observer of the racing mind that encouraged me to overeat, get drunk, and gravitate toward unhealthy food.

What Yoga Can’t Do
Practicing any type of yoga will build strength, but studies show that yoga does not raise your heart rate enough to make it the only form of exercise you need to shed pounds. In order to lose weight, you must eat healthily and burn calories by doing exercise that raises your heart rate on a regular basis. More vigorous yoga styles can provide a better workout than gentle yoga, but if weight loss is your primary goal, you will want to combine yoga with running, walking, or any other aerobic exercise that you enjoy. Still, yoga can play an important role in a weight loss program.
Yes You Can Lose Weight With Yoga
“Yoga can be a good source of exercise,” said Jorianne Numbers, MS, an exercise physiologist with Northwestern Medicine. At the most basic level, she said, yoga is a form of movement that helps you burn calories, which is a major part of losing weight .
But there’s more behind yoga’s relationship with weight loss than first meets the eye. An effective practice also fosters a mind-body connection that makes you more mindful in every facet of your life. “Yoga brings you into a heightened state of awareness,” explained Lara Heimann, physical therapist, yoga instructor, and founder of LYT Method, a yoga certification program. Moving through different poses and holds increases your awareness of your body, and that can translate to other effective weight-loss habits, like eating healthy, which is key for losing weight no matter what your exercise routine. “The congruency between mindfulness on and off of the mat is what can make yoga more effective for weight loss than other forms of exercise,” Heimann told POPSUGAR.

Yoga And Better Sleep
Practicing yoga can help improve the quality of your sleep. You may find that youre able to fall asleep more easily and sleep more deeply when you have a consistent yoga practice. Ideally, you should sleep between 6 and 9 hours each night.
Quality sleep is often associated with weight loss. A 2018 study found that people who had restricted sleep 5 times per week lost less fat than the group that followed their normal sleeping patterns. Both groups were limiting the number of calories they consumed, suggesting that sleep loss has an adverse effect on body composition, including fat loss.
Yoga nidra is a form of guided relaxation that may help you to sleep more deeply and increase mindfulness. You can also set intentions during yoga nidra, which may help you develop weight loss goals.
A small 2018 study found that healthcare workers who did yoga nidra for 8 weeks increased their levels of mindfulness. This mindfulness included acting with awareness and not judging inner experiences.
Their levels of sleepiness werent significantly different at the follow-up. However, this score improved the longer people did the practice. Larger, more in-depth studies are needed to expand on these findings.

Yoga Overview: How It Helps
Yoga has been practiced for thousands of years by people who want to live a healthy and balanced life. Traditionally, yoga is a total lifestyle intended to balance your body, mind, and spirit through postures, breathwork, meditation, and more.
In the West, yoga is principally practiced as asanas, the physical yoga postures. Health care practitioners are increasingly interested in yoga for its many health benefits as modern science continues to validate ancient wisdom.
Studies have shown that yogas health benefits include improving symptoms related to chronic conditions, such as Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, and cancer. People who practice yoga have better immune functioning and better mental health, with less depression and anxiety than people who dont practice yoga. Practicing yoga can also prevent weight gain as well as improve pain control in patients with migraine, rheumatoid arthritis, and lower back pain.
People who practice yoga have reported that they sleep better, their energy levels improve, and theyre happier than when they didnt practice yoga. Many also say that their diet is better because of yoga and that yoga helped them to attain or maintain a healthier weight.
