How Yoga Shapes Your Body

30 min Total Body Toning – Yoga Tone & Sculpt

Well you know your beauty pageants are curvy and glowing, and how bodybuilders are toned and muscular? Imagine the best of both the bodies in one, that is how the body toning with yoga looks.

When yoga shapes your body, it leaves a subtle layering of fat around your joints and over your important muscle groups. One cant deny that subtle touch of fat gives the physique a unique appeal, that is missing in the dry, rugged toned body.

The toning provided by yoga gives your skin a glow and prevent your muscles from looking scarily sticking out. When your body is toned with yoga, it looks gracious. However, this doesnt mean there is any compromise on strength and flexibility.

In the core understanding of yoga, a beautiful body is one that is healthy, strong and well functioning. Thus you must understand that in yoga, toning will not be a separate process, but something that you will unlock through overall mind-body well-being.

Power Yoga Poses For Weight Loss

There is always a debate about whether yoga is ideal for weight loss. Yoga tones your body and helps you lose that extra fat. But the story is different for Power Yoga. It is a vigorous form of yoga that rejuvenates your mind and body.

It is more like a cardiovascular workout. Power Yoga helps promote weight loss and maintain a healthy body and a stress-free life. It also enhances stamina, flexibility, and mental focus.

Power Yoga is a modern form of Yoga that has its roots in Ashtanga Yoga. The asanas build internal heat and increase your stamina, making you strong, flexible, and free of stress. It is a strength-building form of exercise that provides a workout for your whole body.

Reverse Warrior To Extended Side Angle Flow

The third and final mini-flow! You have already been engaging your legs from High Lunge and Warrior II, now this flow will add in more of a challenge while accelerating your heart rate.

How to do Reverse Warrior to Extended Side Angle Flow:

  • From Warrior II, first make sure your body is engaged and you are sinking into your front thigh. Then on your exhale, float your left arm to come down your back leg, reach your front arm up overhead, and slightly arch your back as you lift through your chest.
  • Make sure to keep the bend in your front leg at 90 degrees.
  • Stay here for 1-2 breaths, then float your right forearm to rest on your front thigh, as you lift your back arm up overhead now towards the front of the room.
  • Remember, keep the leg bent! Keep extending through your top arm and lift through your chest, using your core to keep your body upright.
  • Stay here for 1-2 breaths, then repeat the flow 3 times, following your breath.

Yoga Is A Form Of Strength Training

Strength training is a type of physical exercise specializing in the use of resistance to induce muscular contraction, which builds the strength, anaerobic endurance and size of skeletal muscles.

This is exactly what your muscles are doing when you hold poses for extended periods of time.

Have your quads started shaking from holding warrior II for what seems like an hour?

You don’t need barbells to get awesome muscles because your body is your barbell. Your body weight is the most practical weight to get used to lifting because it’s what you are dealing with 24/7.

According to a study done by the University of Wisconsin’s Human Performance Laboratory University, in which subjects practiced Hatha yoga for 55 minutes three days a week for eight weeks, researchers noticed an improvement in their subjects’ strength and endurance.

The American Council on Exercise commenting on the study, saying,

In particular, chest and abdominal strength and endurance was increased significantly, enabling the yoga group to perform an average of six more push-ups and 14 more curl-ups following the study period.

To Tone Muscles With Yoga Use Dynamic Movements

Top Yoga Poses For Weight Loss And Body Toning

Yoga comes in a large variety of exercises and focuses, with only a few focusing heavily on the physical body. Relaxing yoga, recovery yoga, spiritual yoga, and others are all fantastic practices but they are not intended to tone and build muscles.

When looking to tone muscles through yoga, it is important to stick to dynamic, intense yoga practices. This comes from styles that get your heart pumping and muscles moving, stressing them to build strength. In addition, these more intense styles of yoga will build general physical fitness, often improving flexibility, stamina, and overall strength.

Some yoga styles that focus on relaxation or meditation can accompany these high-intensity styles well, and even ultimately help with muscle toning. However, they are simply too slow and unfocused on physical movement to provide great results for toning. If you find a style not mentioned here and wonder how it may help with muscle definition, consider the movement level of the yoga style if it is high, it will likely work.

    Yoga For A Strong Body

In its physical activity guidelines for Americans, the Department of Health and Human Services recommends strength-training all your major muscle groups twice a week for optimal health. The gentler, restorative forms of yoga won’t necessarily count toward that quota. But if your definition of fitness involves the sleek, lean muscles of a “yoga body,” the more strenuous versions of yoga that emphasize strength-building poses can get you there.

You may notice that challenging yoga poses get easier within a few weeks but as Len Kravitz, PhD, at the University of New Mexico points out, short-term adaptations in strength within the first few weeks are actually a result of neural adaptations in your body. Or to put it another way, your body is learning to work smarter as you push it harder.

Kravitz explains that it usually takes about 16 workouts for the real strength adaptations to kick in. This coincides with the eight-week period that’s a typical minimum length of time for studies that examine gains in muscular size, strength or endurance.

If you prefer the gentler, restorative forms of yoga, you should consider supplementing your practice with other exercises, so that you can enjoy the full benefits of strength training. Consider doing weight training circuits in the gym challenge yourself with a boot camp class explore how suspension training can turn your own body weight into a great strength-training aid not unlike its function in the more strenuous yoga classes.

How Yoga Can Help You Lose Weight

I know there are a ton of skeptics out there regarding whether yoga can help you lose weight, more so because I was one of them. Here are five science backed reasons for why you should make yoga into a consistent practice if your goal is weight loss:

  • Yoga helps you build lean muscle. Yoga is a body weight based workout, which has been proven to be just as effective in building strength and lean muscle as free weights. The best part is, the more lean muscle you build, the fast your metabolism becomes, accelerating your fat loss.
  • Yoga decreases stress. Cortisol is a killer when it comes to losing weight, andyoga has been shown to significantly decrease itcompared to other exercises.
  • Certaintypes of yoga are great cardio workouts. Yoga can be an excellent cardio workout, if you do the right types of yoga, such as Vinyasa or Ashtanga yoga. These types involve fast paced flowing sequences that kick up your heart rate and test your endurance.
  • Yoga boosts your metabolism. As stated earlier, muscle and metabolism go hand in hand. The more lean muscle you build, the faster your metabolism will become, causing you to naturally burn more calories at rest.
  • Yoga changes your eating habits. Stress, hormones, and habit are all factors in the food choices we make. Instilling a healthy practice like yoga that decreases stress and hasbeen shown to balance other hormones effecting weight gain, can significantly effect the food choices you make, your hunger, and overall eating habits.

    Setting Realistic Goals For Toning

Everyone’s definition of “toned” is different for one person, that might mean moderate muscle definition for another, it might mean visible or 6-pack abs. The more lean you’d like to look, the more time and effort you’ll need to put into achieving your goals.

For example, a healthy body fat level is relatively easy to achieve once you’ve developed healthy habits you might need to forgo some social time to work out, and consciously work to maintain healthy lifestyle habits. But it won’t significantly disrupt your lifestyle, explains Precision Nutrition. Getting lean enough to see a six-pack requires a lot more time — you may have to give up or significantly cut back other activities, and you might struggle to participate in social gatherings that involve food.

Find the balance that allows you the ability to live the healthiest lifestyle you enjoy. Ultimately, a sustainable lifestyle will keep you looking and feeling fitter and healthier than an overly restrictive one that makes you unhappy.

This largely inclusive style employs poses, sequences, chanting, breathing exercises, meditation, and textual study in varying degrees to meet the goals of the individual practitioner. For toning muscles, the focus would be on poses, sequences, and breathing exercises.

As with anything that allows for dramatic customization, Viniyoga will take some work to apply to muscle toning. However, thanks to the hands-on guidance that instructors provide, specific muscle groups can be targeted and toned much easier than with other styles. The individualized practice also makes Viniyoga great for beginners, as instructors will guide and correct various poses at each step along the way.

Unlike other yoga styles that focus on the form of different poses and the structured history of yoga, Viniyoga is much more focused on results. This style has been willing to adapt and change various poses and sequences to achieve specific goals, rather than leaving them alone in the name of tradition. With this evolution comes the ability to experiment in a safe environment and achieve muscle toning results very quickly.
