When I started the quest for the best free online yoga resources, I set some criteria to quickly narrow my search. I wanted videos that were about an hour long to mimic the length of the studio classes I was used to. I was looking for videos that were an athletic challenge but also provided good routines for relaxation. And since I was new to my yoga practice, I wanted videos that broke down the basics of every pose.


After weeks of trying out different sources recommended by friends, yoga instructors, and good-old Google, I settled on my three favorites:

When searching for free yoga resources, the video-sharing behemoth YouTube is a good place to start. But type yoga into YouTubes search bar, and you get back more than eight million results. Many of these are one-off videos rather than easy-to-follow programs for beginners. There are, however, two free yoga programs that are worth checking out: Yoga for Dummies and Dr. Melissa Wests channel.

I live in the Deep South in a mid size city, and while there are Yoga classes here, I have never been able to find a Yoga class for beginners, and I felt awkward in a class of pros, so I never went back. I felt like I was interrupting their practice with my lack of skill. I just finished your Foundation and Flexibility video and I feel fantastic. So fantastic, that I think I will do it again this afternoon. Unfortunately, I have one of those dreaded sitting jobs and I honestly feel it is killing me. It is compressing my hips joints and I need help. So thank, thank you. I love your soothing manner and the reminders for us newbies to find our own way through a structured pose.     How To Do A Child Pose

    1) On a mat start in a kneeling position with your thighs touching.

    2) Drop your butt toward your heels and stretch your body forward with your stomach comfortably on top of your thighs.


    3) In a fully stretched position rest your arms in a relaxed position in front of you on the floor and rest your forehead on the mat. You should feel a stretch in your shoulders, buttocks, spine and arms.

    How To Do A Downward Pose

    1) Start in a standing position.

    2) Place your hands in a prayer position.

    3) Inhale and raise your hands up fully extend from the side and finger tips touch at the top.

    4) Exhale and hinge into standing forward bend with palms touching the mat.
