The Best Free Yoga Videos For Beginners

Its easy to fall off the yoga practice bandwagon. There are so many things that can keep you away from the studiostaying late at work, forgetting your mat, or even feeling anxious that youll look silly in a class of seasoned yogis. Whatever the reason, there are tons of free online options to supplement your practice. The problem then becomes searching through the haystack of free online resources to find your perfect namaste needle.

When I started the quest for the best free online yoga resources, I set some criteria to quickly narrow my search. I wanted videos that were about an hour long to mimic the length of the studio classes I was used to. I was looking for videos that were an athletic challenge but also provided good routines for relaxation. And since I was new to my yoga practice, I wanted videos that broke down the basics of every pose.

After weeks of trying out different sources recommended by friends, yoga instructors, and good-old Google, I settled on my three favorites:

When searching for free yoga resources, the video-sharing behemoth YouTube is a good place to start. But type yoga into YouTubes search bar, and you get back more than eight million results. Many of these are one-off videos rather than easy-to-follow programs for beginners. There are, however, two free yoga programs that are worth checking out: Yoga for Dummies and Dr. Melissa Wests channel.

Inner And Outer Benefits Of Yoga

Yoga has tons of benefits. Practicing yoga improves your digestion as it will allow you to become more regular and release any tension in your digestive organs.

It is also fantastic for improving your cardiovascular health, breathing, immunity, energy, concentration, flexibility and posture. It also relieves aches and creates calm.

Furthermore it aids weight loss and helps to tone and tighten every area of your body.

As the world is becoming more conscious about the environment, so are the makers of the yoga straps. You need to carefully see the details of the material a strap is made of. Some cheap variants use harmful chemicals to dye their product which can harm the skin. Others may use PVC or other materials which are not recyclable and do not degenerate for years.

Is Yoga Actually A Good Workout

A good workout is not all about the calorie burn. Yes, scientifically you do need more calories out than in to lose weight, but doing excessive cardio everyday is not going to get you long term results, or make getting to your goal any easier.

One of the most important things to ensure fat burn is building muscle, and fortunately yoga is great at building muscle! As explained above, you need to pick the right kind of yoga in order to build muscle, as well as the right kind of poses.

Poses like childs pose and pigeon pose are great poses to relax and improve flexibility, but you arent really creating any type of resistance with your body, so you will not build muscle with these poses.

But poses like chaturanga and warrior III are excellent for activating your core and challenging your body, so you will build muscle with these poses.

Hi there!I just started yoga for the first time ever and I love it! Your videos have helped me so much! Thank you for making these FANTASTIC videos! Keep it up!Thank you Adriene!

Hi Adriene! I cannot thank you enough for your beginner Yoga series. I live in the Deep South in a mid size city, and while there are Yoga classes here, I have never been able to find a Yoga class for beginners, and I felt awkward in a class of pros, so I never went back. I felt like I was interrupting their practice with my lack of skill. I just finished your Foundation and Flexibility video and I feel fantastic. So fantastic, that I think I will do it again this afternoon. Unfortunately, I have one of those dreaded sitting jobs and I honestly feel it is killing me. It is compressing my hips joints and I need help. So thank, thank you. I love your soothing manner and the reminders for us newbies to find our own way through a structured pose. You have such an encouraging soul.

But Why Is Building Muscle So Important

Muscle requires more energy than fat, so the more muscle you build, the more calories you naturally burn- which means your metabolism increases.

And I dont mean building huge, bulky muscle- yoga will help you build lean muscle mass with strength building poses. So youll be building muscle, improving your strength, and burning fat all at the same time- I dont think it gets much better than that.

So, now that you know the basics behind it, lets get to it!

This also has an inner peace yoga that is really helpful with stress! If you just want to do a workout type of yoga its there! There is a fat burner, and core blast! Lots of different types of yoga. The yoga they give you is mostly intermediate and beginner yoga. If you really want to challenge yourself then this app is not for you. But for me this was my first experience with yoga. That means I was doing mostly beginners but it got to easy for me so now I do mostly intermediate yoga. This app has a morning yoga and a nighttime yoga. The Best Yoga Mats To Try

According to yoga instructor Sarah Malcolm, a good yoga mat should be suited to the kind of workout youll most often be using it for. If you like your yoga fast-paced and dynamic, a non-slip yoga mat will provide extra grip and stability. Alternatively, for a gentle, restorative session, a well-cushioned yoga mat will support your spine, knees and hands.

The tester panel at the Hearst Institute calmly worked through morning-sun salutations and post-workout poses to select the best. Cushioning, grip, size and portability formed the basis of every test, resulting in a shortlist that has an option for every man:

Generously proportioned at 2m by 80cm, this versatile mat suits all poses and movements. It grips well to the floor, as well as to your hands and feet. The 4.5mm thickness supports the joints and spine, aiding balance and stability. Our testers found its size and grip best suited to dynamic yoga, such as ashtanga or vinyasa flow. The ample size also makes this perfect for a regular workout or HIIT session. Though its made from dense, non-eco-friendly vinyl foam, its certified Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex, which means its free from any harmful substances. Conveniently, its also machine-washable at up to 40ÂșC.

Oh no! Your browser doesn’t support this video.

There is no real uniform in yoga except bare feet. Wear something comfortable to move in. Stretchy pants and a comfy shirt work well. Many yoga students choose tight fitting athletic wear because this type of clothing wont move when you turn upside down. Its all optional.
