Become a Certified Ananda Yoga Therapist

In October 2018 I decided to discontinue with the IAYT accreditation process. Why?

I had to put the accreditation process on hold while pursuing my osteopathy license from 2014-2018. However once I graduated, I had a bit more time to delve into the process again.

When I was informed that additional fees would be due to continue the process, I decided to take stock and considered the pros and cons of going forward with the IAYT accreditation process.

First of all, the membership fees are expensive which made me pause to question the “value” of having IAYT accreditation.

In my opinion, the only value is that IAYT have positioned themselves as the “standard setters” for yoga therapy schools, and yoga therapists. And knowing that a school or therapist is IAYT accredited gives those of us in the industry recognition.

However, beyond the small percentage of the population who are aware of IAYT, and beyond those letters after our name, there is no other value professionally speaking. When I say value, I am referring to that fact that being IAYT certified: a) does not increase our ability to provide services to our community – we can be of service with or without a certificate – and/or b) IAYT certification does not provide a billing number for insurance coverage to our clients.

Three Reasons You May Want To Become A Yoga Therapist

Go deeper in your work with clients.

If you are eager to make a more significant impact on the people you work with, becoming a yoga therapist could be a good choice.

Yoga therapy goes deeper than typical group yoga classes. It is a customized, multi-dimensional approach that addresses all five levels of Self simultaneously:

  • Physical
  • Energetic
  • Spiritual

Trained yoga therapists can recognize the symptoms of a problem, understand the causes, then choose the tools and practices needed for a coherent and effective holistic treatment plan. Prescriptions can be a mix of movement, stretching, breathing exercises, chanting and mantras, and nutrition recommendations.

Experience personal development as a yoga teacher.

In most yoga therapy training programs, you will receive your own yoga therapy sessions, so you can experience the transformation and learn from it.

From this individual treatment, you can understand the perspective of the client, and undergo the full range of benefits that yoga therapy brings for the body, mind, and spirit including exploring any shadow side roadblocks that could be holding you back from health, happiness, and success.

Once you have graduated from your training program, the extensive work you do with clients will help you deepen your own practice on the mat, and make your life richer both personally and professionally.

Have a wide range of career options.

Yoga therapists can also develop specialities like cancer, autoimmune disease, or senior care.

Now that we have the definition clear, here are the steps to becoming an IAYT-certified yoga therapist.

First, become a yoga teacher

All yoga therapists begin as yoga teachers. Its also a good idea to experience a yoga therapy session for yourself. Find a yoga therapist here.

My own journey started as a yoga teacher who wanted more. Although the 200- and 500-hour trainings Id done were excellent, they didnt provide me with the skills to safely and effectively work with populations like those with PTSD, arthritis, anxiety, depression, diabetes, and stroke recovery. So my search began.

One: Train Like A Yogi

The first step to becoming a yoga teacher of abundance and comfort is to become a yoga teacher.

These days, you can choose a yoga school in a variety of styles of yoga. Traditional styles such as Hatha yoga, Iyengar yoga, or Ashtanga Vinyasa are common for 200-hour teacher training programs. If you choose to register with Yoga Alliance, you can also log hours spent training in other styles of yoga.

This might seem like a no-brainer, but the more you learn, the better you will teach.

The more immersed you are in the teachings, the more authentic and valuable your presence will be in the classroom.

Win for the students in your yoga classes: they dont have to listen to a fitness instructor just reading a script about yoga poses and breathing. Win for wherever you teach: better yoga teachers are more likely to have yogis who return to practice with them, generating more income for the gym or yoga studio.

And WIN for YOU! Whether you teach yoga full-time or as a part-time job, its exponentially more fulfilling to do something that you love. To work a job that you cannot get enough of.
