Yogic Philosophy And Ethics While Teaching
Hours of instruction: 30
At least 2 of these hours must be dedicated specifically to the yoga philosophy of ethics while teaching yoga. Why?
Because youll run into many different dynamics that will test your ethics. Situations that dont necessarily have clear or easy answers. Places where youll have to use your best judgment and ultimately your intuition.
Some example areas of instruction:
Traditional texts: reading and interpreting texts like the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, and the Bhagavad Gita.
Ethics: how to deal with student-teacher dynamics, including relationships and sexuality.
Seva: becoming an instrument of service to others through delivering the practice of yoga in a pure and authentic way.
Yogic lifestyle: adopting various practices from the Yamas and Niyamas , and the potential benefits of a vegetarian diet when doing yoga.

What Are The Levels Of Yoga Certification
For starters, you should know that yoga teacher training courses are classified by the number of hours students spend training in the art and science of yoga.
YTTCs can technically be comprised of any number of hours, but the most commonly-found programs are 200-hour, 300-hour, and 500-hour yoga teacher training courses.
You are also likely to stumble upon 50-hour and 100-hour courses that specialize in teaching very particular styles of yoga.
However, the basic building block for becoming a yoga instructor is a 200-hour YTTC. Youll see 200-hour CYTs and 200-hour RYTs . RYT simply means these are teachers who have both completed a 200-hour YTTC and have registered with Yoga Alliance, an international organization that sets guidelines for yoga teacher trainings in an attempt to ensure the quality of YTTCs. Yoga Alliance charges fees to both students and schools to be listed within their online directory and promises membership benefits for paying those fees.
Read my post about Yoga Alliance and learn the pros and cons of registering as a yoga teacher here: What is Yoga Alliance?
Many studios may say they only hire 200-Hour RYTs, since Yoga Alliances private trademark RYT has become synonymous with the 200-Hour education. Usually, what studios are really looking for are someone who has at least 200-Hours of training experience, has yoga insurance , and can, well, TEACH with authenticity, compassion and authority.

Ashtanga Yoga Teacher Training
Ashtanga, in Sanskrit, means eight limbs and can refer to the ancient yoga lifestyle that is laid out in the yoga sutras of Patanjali, or to the vigorous style of asana that is taught by the family of Pattabhi Jois his institute, KPJAYI, in Mysore, India.
An Ashtanga asana practice is marked by a universal sequence of yoga postures known as the series. When you show up to an Ashtanga yoga class, you will be doing the same flow of poses, in the exact same order, every time. In the Ashtanga tradition, everyone begins at the same place, with the physically demanding flow known as the Primary Series. Your teacher tells you how far into this sequence you should proceed according to your ability level, and will advance you on to the next poses as they see fit.
An incredibly challenging and transformative style of yoga, Ashtanga has a strong emphasis on dedicated self-practice, meaning you roll out of bed and straight onto your yoga mat for sometimes two hours of huffing and puffing, without the encouragement of a Lululemon-clad yoga teacher.
If you want to become officially certified in Ashtanga yoga, you must study with the founders grandson, Sharath Jois in Mysore, India. At present, only Sharath can authorize a yoga teacher to share Ashtanga yoga with others. However, other yoga teacher trainings led by advanced Ashtangis can give you a wonderful introduction to the practice.

Is An Ryt Certification Necessary
To become an RYT you basically just pay flat out fees to Yoga Alliance which come out to about $115 JUST for the initial registration. After that you have to keep paying $65 annually for maintenance.
Like clockwork.
You also need to continue your yoga education by enrolling in workshops, taking new classes and trainings to stay up-to-date with safe teaching methods.
Good news is you can still participate in a Yoga Alliance certified teacher training without having to register as an RYT, then having the option to register later on in the future.
Lets just say because someone is registered as an RYT doesnt mean that they are a qualified teacher.
It takes practice and dedication to be a good teacher.
Knowledge is power.
Our advice to you is to save your membership money and invest in more workshops & trainings instead!!
Why Has Yoga Alliance Created These Guidelines

Basically, a bunch of passionate yogis got together and decided that people werent spreading real yoga and that this needed to be regulated, to keep things authentic, ya know?
Think about the founders of Burning Man they had to create some ethics and a standard so the festival wasnt just about people running around naked and burning a giant wooden structure it is easy for something beautiful to lose its true essence when it becomes popular, so to reflect the ethos and culture there must be some sort of backbone.
Because not everyone who claims to be a Tantric Yoga Sex God is really who they say they are.
Same with all the fake gurus and shamans out there.
The only problem with Yoga Alliance is that they created these guidelines but dont follow up on the schools to check to see if they practice what they preach.
All they require is for the school to submit their curriculum, and if it meets their requirements, they get approved.
Well, as quoted by the Great Master Patanjali in his book the Yoga Sutras, he talks about Satya which means truth as one of the rules for ethical living:
As truthfulness is achieved, the fruits of actions naturally result according to the will of the yogi.
Discernment people, discernment.
